The Eldertree “Sambucus Nigra” is a medium sized deciduous shrub, normally between 13 and 20 feet high. In some cases growing into a much larger tree. Although it is common all over Europe, it grows particularly well in Galicia, on the tip of the northwest Iberian penisula. Its flowers blossom in spring, they are white, particularly beautiful and have long been attributed with having healing properties. Its leaves are green and serrated. It’s mostly found along riversides and paths, however, it is common to find it growing in derelict or abandoned homes where it is said to continue the spirits of long past inhabitants. It blossoms in April and June with a flat topped brilliant inflorescence, resembling a “Corymb” Its white flowers have a distinct and fresh aroma, they are edible when fried and make a particularly distinct infusion. In Galicia, Elderberries are known as “Witch Grapes” they have an ancient association with medicinal recipes, dyes and even magic potions! Elderberries are initially green but they ripen to a rich dark red and when prefectly ripened they resemble a bunch of shiny dark purple marbles. There is a subspecies of the “Sabucus nigra”, known as “Sabugueiro” traditionally found in Galicia and the north of Portugal. Both it’s berries and flowers have a particularly pleasant taste and strong aroma. This, together with its numerous medicinal properties, make this shrub a real natural wonder. From the Eldertree, we can also make essential oils. The Elder also contains tanin, phosphorus, flavonoids, carotenes, vitamin C & B amongst other things. The Elder has long been associated with the treatment of respiratory problems. It alleviates perspiration, releases mucus, reduces inflamation of the repiratory tract, decreases a high temperature and above all soothes a cough. It possesess depurative and diruretic properties that help with eliminating toxins. It has a natural calming effect and can be useful for the treatment of nervous disorders such as insomnia, migranes, headaches and mild inflamations. The wood of the Eldertree is often used in musical insturments and toymaking. The Eldertree was believed by ancient Celts to be an abode for several deities, therefore, uprooting it or even cutting it back could bring bad luck!
