The Retinta is one of the main autochthonous bovine breeds of Spain. It was distributed throughout the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula, where it originated the local forms Extremadura colorada, Andalusian retinta and Cádiz blonde, from which a modern and improved version of the breed comes from. As a double meat-work aptitude bovine, it was maintained for centuries.
Its color is fundamentally red, with varying shades from the darkest (red) to the lightest (red and blonde) with degradation around the eyes (partridge eye).
It is considered a breed of eminently meat aptitude. Its meat is red, tender, juicy and has an exquisite sapidity that has made it stand out from other breeds in competitions and sensory evaluations carried out through blind tastings. It is also characterized by a high rusticity and a marked maternal character.
