HISTORY
Rioja is a region of secrets and areas of deep silence, where the people of the land, over the years, have extracted from the vines the most delicate and delicious wines.
Bodegas Corral was created over one hundred years ago by Saturnino Daroca, a Riojano through and through and both a grape producer and wine-grower. He planted his first vines in the small village of Sojuela, close to Navarrete in Rioja. His daughter married Martín Corral, who gave his name to the winery and ceded to it, as a seal of quality, his coat of arms, which continues to this day to underpin the family values attached to our winery.
In the 1950s, Florencio and Gregorio Corral joined the business as new markets were beginning to open up.
In 1974, adapting to the evolving needs of the bodega’s production and sales, they built a new winery in Navarrete, carefully preserving their customary hand-crafted wine-growing tradition. The business was also made into a limited company, made up of shareholders from the Rioja region.
THE PILGRIMS' ROAD TO SANTIAGO
From the Celtiberians to the Romans, from the Moors to the Catholic Kings, history has left its mark on our land. Such architectural gems as the Santa María la Real monastery at Nájera and the monasteries of Cañas and Valvanera are some of its finest examples.
Bodegas Corral is located right on the Camino Francés (the French pilgrim way). This was awarded World Heritage status and listed as the oldest pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela. It was within this particular enclave of the route that the San Juan de Acre pilgrims’ hospital was built, the remains of which can be found at our winery.
At this special location, where pilgrims would share with their fellow travellers whatever knowledge they had acquired, a culture of wine gradually developed thanks to each traveller’s contribution.
The essence of Bodegas Corral is knowledge of the art of wine; knowledge of the arcane and volatile, which solely in this location was passed on from traveller to traveller.
